ABANDONED
Santa Maria della Pietà opened in 1914 as the largest psychiatric institution in Europe. After a very complex and controversial history and following a new legislation on mental institutions, it was officially closed in 1999. The hospital has left a priceless legacy to the city of Rome: an architectural complex full of memories of the past inhabitants.
Although it is still quite difficult to get access and capture any kind of visual material, I decided to try and document the abandoned structures and the pavilions with the traces of the people who lived there.
